First Edition of Ida Tarbell's History of the Standard Oil Company, Inscribed by Her in Both Volumes

Ida Tarbell. The History of the Standard Oil Company. Illustrated with Portraits, Pictures, and Diagrams. New York: McClure, Phillips & Co., 1904. First edition, presentation copies, inscribed in both volumes on the half-title: [volume I] "Inscribed for / R. P. Beardslee / by the Author / Ida M. Tarbell / September 1929 / [flourish]"; [volume II] "Inscribed for / R. P. Beardslee / with the Good Wishes / of / Ida M. Tarbell / September 1929." Laid-in is a typed letter signed from Tarbell (signature is secretarial) on personal stationery, dated August 31, 1929, and is addressed to the recipient of the inscriptions. In the letter, Tarbell apologizes for not answering Mr. Beardslee's request to have her autograph his copy of The History of the Standard Oil Company. She was ill when his letter arrived, and she asks him to send the books for her inscription (some offsetting and creasing to letter). This is the only unabridged version of this work; later editions were published with several chapters purged. Two octavo volumes. [xx], 406; [xiv], 409, [3, blank] pages. With frontispiece portraits and numerous plates inserted throughout. Publisher's full red cloth, front board stamped and lettered in blind in a central motif, spines lettered in gilt. Spines a bit dull, some soiling and edgewear to bindings, front hinge of volume I cracked, rear hinges of both volumes starting, previous owner's pencil notes and ownership inscriptions, two leaves (vii/viii, ix/x) roughly opened in volume II. Some offsetting. Still, a very good copy of this important history. The recipient of the inscriptions was president of The Energine Company of Cleveland, OH. Howes T33.

    More Information:

"This work is the outgrowth of an effort on the part of the editors of McClure's Magazine to deal concretely in their pages with the trust question. In order that their readers might have a clear and succinct notion of the processes by which a particular industry passes from the control of the many to that of the few, they decided a few years ago to publish a detailed narrative of the history of the growth of a particular trust. The Standard Oil Trust was chosen for obvious reasons. It was the first in the field, and it has furnished the methods, the charter, and the traditions for its followers. It is the most perfectly developed trust in existence; that is, it satisfies most nearly the trust ideal of entire control of the commodity in which it deals. Its vast profits have led its officers into various allied interests, such as railroads, shipping, gas, copper, iron, steel, as well as into banks and trust companies, and to the acquiring and solidifying of these interests it has applied the methods used in building up the Oil Trust. It has led in the struggle against legislation directed against combinations. Its power in state and Federal government, in the press, in the college, in the pulpit, is generally recognized." (from the Preface). Howes T33.
