By Order of Major General Patterson, U.S.A., Commanding the Second Division, Army of Occupation, Mexico. Philadelphia: Lindsay & Blakiston, 1847. First edition. 8vo. v, 32 pp. Nine folding maps, each measuring 15" x 9". Pale green wraps, lightly chipped with some soiling. Paper to spine worn away. Outer pages toned; light foxing throughout. Inked notation on reverse of first preliminary page has caused some negative offsetting to facing title page. Some occasional and inoffensive penciled underlining and notations in margins. Tilden's account of a mission undertaken during the Mexican War to determine the feasibility of steamboat navigation beyond Camargo. "An important account of a river journey from Camargo, at the mouth of the Rio San Juan, up to the Rio Grande nearly 300 miles to the Presidio de Rio Grande, with detailed route maps including much information on the nature of the country on both shores. The explorations were made by order of Gen. Patterson, commanding the second division, Army of Occupation" (Raines).
