Best Early Work on the West Indies

Bryan Edwards. The History, Civil and Commercial, of the British Colonies in the West Indies. London: Printed for John Stockdale, 1794.

Second edition with the plates, first edition appearing the previous year. Two quarto volumes. liv, 494; [2], 520, [1, errata] pages. Large folding engraved maps "A New Map of the West Indies" and "A Map of the Island of Jamaica Divided into Counties and Parishes" in volume I and fourteen additional plates.

Contemporary tree calf, with gilt spine and black calf label. Corners moderately worn, joints cracked with moderate shelf wear. Boards on volume I crudely repaired by sewing to spine panel. Moderate foxing and browning throughout with offsetting to the plates and maps; tear on page 269 and 283 of volume II. Generally, a very good, clean set worthy of professional restoration.

Edwards' work contained much information on slaves, the slave trade, Indians, and sugar plantations. Also a wealth of statistical information contained in tables in back of volume II concerning West Indian exports and imports to and from Great Britain and Ireland.

"Obtain, by all the means, the History of those Islands, by Bryan Edwards, the 'facile princeps' of writers in his department" (Dibdin).
