Bret Harte. Portable Writing Desk. Walnut with brass drop handles, cover bearing the author's monograph in brass: "F. B. H.". Manufactured in London by Parkins & Gotto, Oxford Street. Presented to Bret Harte while in England, he composed all of the stories that he wrote in Europe on this desk, and continued his use of the desk until he passed away in 1902.

For authors of this period, a writing desk is one of the most intimate association "realia" that a collector might hope to acquire and cherish. This desk is in excellent condition, and was obviously treated with great care. It has a drop front with a hinged wooden panel that extends forward and measures approximately 18 by 16 inches when open. Inside, and exposed when the desk is open, there are compartments for paper, envelopes and other writing supplies, and three drawers with brass handles to the right. Beneath these compartments there is one drawer as wide as the case, used for pens, stamps, blotters, and ink. Two ink bottles with silver lids are included. Also contains a leather calendar, with a clock face, and with the days stamped in gilt. Under the cover, inside the desk, there is a leather holder for writing tools. Measures 11.5 inches high,16 inches long, and 9 inches wide. Very good.
