First Edition, First Issue, of Dracula, With an Autograph Note Signed by Bram Stoker

Bram Stoker. Dracula. Westminster: Archibald Constable and Company, 1897. First edition, first issue with the verso of the last integral leaf blank with no ad for The Shoulder of Shasta and no inserted publisher's catalog at the end. Approximately 7.25 x 4.75 inches. Octavo. ix, [1], 390, [2, blank] pages. Original publisher's yellow cloth, blocked and lettered in red. Binding is quite soiled, especially at the spine (smoke damage possibly), some wear and a few tears or bumping to boards and spine, previous repair to fix front hinge apparent, gutter between [ii] and [iii] cracked, rear hinge cracked, some thumbsoiling throughout on text, text lightly shaken. Good. [and:] Bram Stoker. Autograph Note Signed. Angel Hotel, Cardiff: "23-9-97". Note addressed to unknown correspondent stating that Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905, the famous actor, for whom Stoker worked as secretary) had received the correspondent's letter (there is more to the letter, but it is difficult to read). Approximately 7.25 x 4.75 inches. On Angel Hotel stationery. Some chipping to margins (with some minor loss of text), light smudging to text, letter is split in half at center crease. Good.

One of Stoker's letters that mention Sir Henry Irving is a fitting addition to a copy of Dracula, as it is generally understood that Stoker based his monstrous vampire on Irving. Dalby 10(a).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
