A-N12. 310,[2]pp. Contemporary calf, covers completely covered with gilt fleur-de-lis surrounded by gilt border, spine similarly gilt, a.e.g.,small repairs to spine ends, binding a bit warped, some light dampstains. Engraved frontis. with the seven liberal arts, miners working in a mine, and the author (also underground) working by lamp-light. From the Krown & Spellman Collection.

    More Information: Drexel (1581-1638) Jesuit ascetic writer, professor of humanities and rhetoric at Augsburg and Dillingen and court preacher to the Elector of Bavaria. He had a fancy for oddly titled books of which he published over thirty. Many of his works were aimed at children and are sought after for their illustrations. This work was first published in 1638 and has (abridged) been translated into English as the "Scholar Armed" in the 18th century. In small sections Drexel discusses and lists the recommended literature ;a scholar's pocket guide.  De Backer/Sommervogel III,200:23.
