Gertrude Lawrence (1898-1952) was an English actress and performer, who achieved great fame on the English stage. She was close friends with Noel Coward, who had written or developed several plays for her. She had married twice, and had a string of lovers, both male and female (perhaps most notably, Daphne Du Maurier, author of Rebecca (1938)).

Star! (1968) was a musical film biography of Lawrence, directed by Robert Wise, and starring Julie Andrews as Lawrence. It had been nominated for several awards, including seven Academy Awards. Lamb was the story editor, and several of the letters in this collection were written by Lawrence's friends who contributed to the research.
