    Description

Booker T. Washington. The Future of the American Negro. Boston: Small, Maynard & Co., 1899. First edition. Signed and inscribed by the author to the front pastedown, "To / Mrs. Mary G. Boardman / from / Booker T. Washington / Feb. 7, 1900." Octavo. 244 pages. Illustrated with portrait frontispiece of the author. Publisher's maroon cloth stamped in gilt. Corners just bumped, minor edgewear, spine and top edge sunned, minor soiling along joints. Ivory endpapers; front hinge just starting, lengthy ink gift inscription to the front free endpaper recto. Internally generally clean and tight, top edge guilt, other edges untrimmed; some offsetting from laid-in newspaper clipping, a few gutters overextended, text block edges toned with moderate wear and some chipping. Very good.

Part of the gift inscription reads, "a most prized possession," and we couldn't agree more. A beautiful signed copy of Booker T. Washington's first major work, based partially on his earlier speeches and articles.
