    More Information:

    Melville (1535-1617) went to France where he became representative of Henry II to the court of Scotland. He also worked as a matchmaker (unsuccessfully) on behalf of several foreign suitors to Elizabeth and Mary of Scotland. Mary encouraged him to come to live in Scotland and he was often her emissary to Elizabeth. He also worked for James on his accession but he declined an invitation to go with James to England and retired to write his memoirs. They are an important and essential document in the history of a turbulent time. Charles Blount (1654-1693) diestical writer and freethinker, with strong whig tendencies. He died of self-inflicted wounds on his being thwarted in marrying his deceased wife's sister.
