Whistler's butterfly device throughout, used as head- and tail-pieces, and variously as decorations. Publisher's cloth backed, brown paper covered boards with gilt title and butterfly device on front cover, title and gilt butterfly device on spine. Armorial bookplate of "Francis Layland Barratt" on front pastedown. Includes Heinemann's prospectus and order form for the book loosely laid in. [together with:] Haldane Macfall. Whistler. Butterfly, Wasp, Wit Master of the Arts of Enigma. Edinburgh & London: T.N. Foulis, 1905. Octavo. 71 pages. Frontispiece and fifteen illustrated plates. White cloth boards with title and butterfly design on front cover and spine. Previous owner's holograph pen name on front free endpaper. Extensive holograph pencil note on front pastedown, indicating: "This is probably a rare early state; it is without a Dedication, and the limitation, which is normally found on verso of the dedication leaf "To my wife" is here printed on verso of title page..." . Boards rubbed, darkened and soiled, corners bumped; some foxing; otherwise in very good condition. From the William E. Fredeman Collection.
