Frank James: A Very Rare "Autobiography" of a Man Who Claimed to be the "Real" Jesse James. In Burrs under the Saddle Raymond Adams devotes two pages (pp. 281-283) to a derisive discussion of this 1926 book, which was published on behalf of one Joe Vaughn, who claimed to be the real Frank James, by his daughter Sarah Snow (Pine Bluff, Arkansas: Norton Printing Co.) Adams systemically demolishes the bizarre and often contradictory claims made in this book using such descriptive terms as "unbelievable," "ridiculous," "illiterate," "confused," and ultimately, "pathetic." "Much trash has been written about the James Boys", Adams concludes, "but both Frank and Jesse would turn over in their graves if they knew about this one."

Nonetheless, Sarah Snow was a lifelong advocate, and in 1969, along with her nephew and a cousin, published another volume, This Was Frank James, which rehashed her father's claims.

As a James collecting novelty, this small 130-page paperback volume is quite rare. In 1953 M.E. Ismert of Kansas City was apparently seeking a copy, and exchanged a series of letters with Sarah Snow. At first she told Ismert that her father "was afraid for his sons he had seven I just had a few copies printed," and that she wanted to keep her one and only copy. However, after a few letters went back and forth, she "found" this copy which she gave to Ismert. Our research has failed to uncover a copy that has ever appeared on the auction market.
