Two Signed Letters from Frank Harris
    to "Turnabout Theatre" Founder
    Forman Brown

Frank Harris. Two TLS from Frank Harris to Forman Brown. October 11, 1926 [and:] December 16, 1926. Two sheets of "Excelsior/ F. Guerimand & Co./ Voiron" water marked typing paper. Approximately 8 x 10.5 inches each. Folded horizontally and vertically. Both sent by Frank Harris in care of "American Express Co. in Nice, France" and signed by him in ink. Small holograph pencil dealer's notes in corners. Light edge and fold wear, small edge tears, and creases. The first letter thanks Forman Brown for having sent Harris his book of poetry [not named by title, most likely Walls, 1925] and gives a short critique. Harris comments briefly on his own works, including a book on Oscar Wilde, his own autobiography, and book of short stories Unpath'd Waters. The second letter reads: "Dear Mr. Brown:/ I regret that I am not having the magazine as I expected to, and am therefore returning your poems./ Yours sincerely,/ Frank Harris." Both letters in very good condition.

    More Information:

Forman Brown (1901-1996) was a renowned figure in the world of puppet theatre, as well as a talented lyricist. Upon graduation he founded the Yale Puppeteers with Harry Burnett and Roddy Brandon. In 1941 the Yale Puppeteers opened the "Turnabout Theatre" in Los Angeles, which featured reversible seats. There would be a marionette or puppet show at one end of the auditorium and when it was over the audience would be instructed to turn their chairs around to watch a live revue at the other end.

Forman Brown, an openly gay man, also wrote the novel Better Angel (1933) under the pseudonym of Richard Meeker, which "is now considered the first American novel to present the 'gay' experience in a healthy light."
