The Suppressed First Edition of Riata and Spurs

Charles A. Siringo. INSCRIBED. Riata and Spurs. Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1927. First edition. Inscribed on the front free endpaper to acclaimed Texas poet C.C. Walsh. Octavo. xiv, 276 pages. Introduction by Gifford Pinchot. Illustrated with photographs. Original yellow-brown pictorial cloth, no dust jacket present. Paper imperfection on page 169 not affecting text, occasional foxing or marginal stains. Otherwise, a very good copy of the rare suppressed first edition, complete with the potentially litigable references to Siringo's experiences with the Pinkerton Agency, inscribed and dated June 30th 1927, only a few weeks before the books were recalled to be revised. From the library of John Carroll Collins.
    Siringo's inscription reads, in full: To C.C. Walsh,/with good wishes/of the author,/Chas. A. Siringo/Pasadena, Calif./June 30th 1927."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
