More Information: Balzac (1595-1654), at the age of 29, retired to his estate of Balzac, where he dedicated himself to perfecting French prose.  An early member of the Academie Francaise, he is a master of lucidity, thus preparing the way for Pascal and Bossuet. "He expressed sound, if somewhat  pessimistic, opinions (some of them commonplaces from ancient authors) on ethics, politics and literature; but he also shows love of rustic scenery and he can give an agreeable turn to his wisdom."
