    More Information:

[William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody]. Helen Cody Wetmore. Last of the Great Scouts. [Duluth: Duluth Press, 1899]. First edition. Inscribed by Cody on the half-title to the son of his friend William A. Bell: "With the Compliments/of the Subject/W. F. Cody/"Buffalo Bill"/To Leonard C. Bell/E. Rouche/Dec. 25th 1904". Octavo. [2, blank], [1, half-title], [1, blank], [xiv], 267, [3, blank] pages. With portrait frontispiece of Cody and his sister, and numerous illustrations inserted throughout. Publisher's full brown cloth, front board decoratively stamped in blind and lettered in gilt, spine lettered in gilt. Cloth spine is a bit toned; binding edgeworn with several short tears or bumps; some soiling to binding; hinges cracked (yet still fairly solid), endleaves soiled; several early pages creased (some of which, such as the half-title, where the crease runs through the lower portion of Cody's inscription), and pages xi through [xiv] have tears along the creases, with the tear on page xiii/[xiv] running the entire width of the page); text a bit toned; text with occasional soiling; binding skewed. Bookplate of Wm. A. Bell on the front pastedown. Overall, a fair copy. The recipient, Leonard C[ody] Bell was the son of William A. Bell, a friend of Buffalo Bill and Cody's printer (who printed playbills and posters for Cody's Wild West show). Leonard Cody Bell later became a performer in Cody's Wild West show (as "the Boy Bugler"). From the James C. Seacrest Collection.
