[Paul Robeson]. Eslanda Goode Robeson. Paul Robeson Negro. London: 1930. First edition, association copy, inscribed to Carl Laemmle, Jr.

    More Information:

[Paul Robeson]. Eslanda Goode Robeson. Paul Robeson Negro. London: Victor Gollancz, 1930. First edition, association copy, inscribed by the subject on the front free endpaper: "To Carl Laemmle Jun. / With Pleasant Memories / of Universal + thanks for his / encouragement + consideration. / All best / Paul Robeson / London Eng. May 1936;" signed by the author (Robeson's wife) beneath the inscription. Octavo. 153, [3, blank] pages; numerous illustrations inserted throughout. Publisher's orange cloth, spine lettered in black. Publisher's dust jacket. Cloth spine toned and worn; corners bumped; some soiling and rubbing to boards; front hinge just starting; a few gutters slightly overopened. Text very slightly skewed. Dust jacket spine thumbsoiled and chipped; panels chipped and worn with several tears; one tape repair to verso; jacket soiled. Overall, a very good copy with an excellent association. Carl Laemmle Jr. was the son of the founder of Universal Studios, and produced the 1936 film version of Show Boat, which featured Robeson's breakthrough performance as Joe (his version of the song "Ol' Man River," is one of the most famous sequences from that film). From the James C. Seacrest Collection.
