[Mary Wollstonecraft, subject]. William Godwin. Memoirs of the Author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. London: Johnson, 1798. Second edition, corrected.

    More Information:

Small octavo. [iv], 206 pages. Bound with half-title, but without portrait frontispiece of Mary Wollstonecraft (as is most often the case). Bound in contemporary full mottled calf, board double-ruled in gilt. Rebacked to style in modern mottled calf, modern gilt burgundy morocco lettering label, gilt. Marbled endleaves. Hinges reinforced with modern cloth. Front blank just a bit loose, a few inoffensive pencil notes throughout, small inkstamp on rear blank, bookplate. Some wear. A very good copy, published the same year as the first. This edition soon followed the first, as Godwin felt that he had been too honest about Wollstonecraft in the first edition and that this honesty may have damaged her standing with the public.
