    [From the library of Charles Dickens, association copy]. George Ticknor. Life of William Hickling Prescott. Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1864. First edition. Inscribed to Charles Dickens from James T. Fields on verso of front free endpaper, "Charles Dickens Esquire / with kind regards of J. T. Fields / Boston U.S.A Jan.y 1864." Quarto (10 x 7.5625 inches; 254 x 192 mm.). [4], x, 491, [1, blank] pages. Portrait frontispiece and two additional inserted plates, one of which is a folding manuscript facsimile. Engraved head- and tail-pieces, decorated initials. Bound in original green cloth with spine and front stamped in gilt, back stamped in blind. Top edge gilt, other edges rough-trimmed. In custom black cloth clamshell with dark green morocco spine labels, stamped in gilt. Some wear resulting in fading to front and back of binding, attempted color correction; loss of some gilt to edges of front board; evidence of damp at fore-edge front and back; minor rubbing and bumping to edges; cloth worn through at two small spots of back fore-edge. Damp staining to fore-edges of all endpapers. Very minor soiling to first few leaves. Persistent mild marginal staining to bottom of pages toward fore-edge. Some darkening at extremities of untrimmed pages. Extremely minimal rubbing to clamshell. Very good. Includes two mounted manuscript letters: one by Prescott dated April 18, 1845 addressed to Ticknor with a postscript in which he mentions Texas and President Polk; the second by Ticknor dated May 27, 1865 from Boston, written to Charles H. Hart in response to a request for Prescott material. Dickens's bookplate on the front pastedown, with a label reading "From the Library of Charles Dickens, Gadshill Place, June 1870."
