    More Information:

Bernard Malamud. "Life - From Behind a Counter." New York and Pittsburgh: Scholastic Publishing, Company [1932]. Malamud's first appearance in print, his essay published in Saplings, Seventh Series. With a later inscription by Malamud on page 114: "For the Holtzman Library/Bernard Malamud." Most likely inscribed to famed collector Irwin Holtzman. Malamud's essay appears on pages 114-119 in Saplings. Octavo. Publisher's full burgundy cloth, front board lettered in gilt. Minor rubbing to binding, else fine. From the collection of Donald Kaufmann.

Saplings was a series of books publishing essays or poetry by promising student writers from across the United States. Malamud's essay about working as a clerk in his father's store is his first appearance in print, pre-dating his first published short stories by over ten years, and nearly twenty years before his first novel. It is extremely rare to find, even more so to find a copy inscribed by him.
