The Doheny Copy of The Workes of Benjamin Jonson

Ben Jonson. The Workes of Benjamin Jonson [with] The Workes of Benjamin Jonson... The Second Volume. London: Will Stansbury and Richard Meighen, 1616, 1640 (actually 1631-1641]. First collected edition. Three quarto volumes bound into two (volume II was originally issued as four parts in two volumes). Approximately 10.75 x 7 inches. [vi], 1015, [1, blank]; [viii], 88, 170, 132, 155, [1, blank], 292 pages. With engraved portrait by Vaughan (most likely supplied from a second edition) and engraved title-page (skilfully cut and re-mounted) inserted into volume I. Full later calf by Bedford, boards triple-ruled in gilt, spines tooled in gilt in compartments, burgundy and black gilt morocco lettering labels, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endleaves. Both volumes rebacked, preserving the original spines, some wear to spines and corners, some moderate discoloring to boards, hinges just barely starting, some toning and occasional soiling in text, faint ink notations on the blank verso of the final leaf of volume I. Leaf Kk3 in volume II a bit thin with a small hole. Overall, a fine copy. With bookplates of Estelle Doheny as well as Alfred and Rosalind Littleton, in each volume on pastedowns. The publication of the first volume of this title heralded plays as serious published literature in English. Its successful publication helped pave the way for the next major publication devoted to plays by another author, namely the First Folio of Shakespeare. This copy, being from the Doheny library, is of particular interest. STC 14751, 14754.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
