Battle of Little Big Horn: An Important Typed Manuscript Incorporating Details Provided by One of the Two Survivors from Custer's Command. Two troopers from Custer's contingent survived because on the eve of the battle they were given dispatches to deliver. One of these was Sergeant Daniel Kanipe from Tom Custer's troop, who rode to Captain McDougall, in charge of the back train, to instruct him to come forward quickly with the packs and to order Captain Benteen to come quickly with his contingent should he encounter them. This seven-page manuscript, signed by his son J. E. Kanipe (himself a former U.S. Cavalry lieutenant) incorporates fascinating details and evaluations he received in written and oral reports from Sgt. Kanipe. Included are a number of specifics we have not encountered in other accounts, making this 1936 manuscript of great interest and importance to the serious Custer scholar. Included is a letter of transmittal conveying the manuscript from Kanipe the younger to one I. M. Meekins, a U.S. District Court judge. From the collection of Donald P. Dow.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
