    More Information:

Balzac (1595-1654), at the age of 29, retired to his estate of Balzac, where he dedicated himself to perfecting French prose.  An early member of the Academie Francaise, he is a master of lucidity, thus preparing the way for Pascal and Bossuet. "He expressed sound, if somewhat pessimistic, opinions (some of them commonplaces from ancient authors) on ethics, politics and literature; but he also shows love of rustic scenery and he can give an agreeable turn to his wisdom."-OCFL. This is apparently misdescribed in RLIN as a variant issue of Wing B616. Actually that is the second part of this volume. The copy described in RLIN lacks B1 the title-page of the second volume and M8, the blank both of which are present in our volume. Wing B 613 & B616 .ESTC r3216.
