    Ashbel Smith. Reminiscences of the Texas Republic. Annual Address Delivered Before the Historical Society of Galveston, December 15, 1875. Galveston: Published by the Society, 1876. First edition, with signatures numbered, one of 100 copies. Octavo. xvi, [17]-82 pages. Perfect binding in original wrappers. First gathering disbound with first and last leaves tipped to front wrapper, others laid in. Wrappers soiled with some light staining, spine cracked with some paper loss, rear hinge reinforced, pages faintly toned with some offsetting and soiling to preliminary and terminal leaves. A good, repaired, copy in the scarce original wrappers. Basic Texas Books, 186. Howes S574.

    More Information:

    "The text is personal but objective, a blended narrative of anecdote and analysis. Smith reviews the Texas border question, the various votes and movements for recognition and annexation in Texas and the United States, his activities in France and England, and the treaties which he negotiated. He carefully treats the slavery issue and corrects the 'grave' errors in the 'incomplete and otherwise not wholly reliable history of Texas by Yoakum.'" - Jenkins, Basic Texas Books, 186.
