    Description

Ashbel Smith. Reminiscences of the Texas Republic. Annual Address delivered before the Historical Society of Galveston, December 15, 1875. Galveston: Published by the Society, 1876. First edition. 8vo. xvi, 82 pp. Rebound in marbled paper over boards with cloth back strip and leather title label with gilt lettering to spine. Original front printed paper wrapper bound in. Hinges cracked. Corners bumped. Missing a portion of the title label and cloth to spine. Bookplate on inside of front wrapper. Laid in is a printed slip designating this copy from the "Herbert McLean Evans Collection / Western Americana." Embossed seal of the Historical Society of Galveston to half title page. Very good.

The true first edition, with the printed signature numbers on pages 17, 33, 49, etc. Only 100 copies of this edition were printed. John Jenkins, in his Basic Texas Books, writes of Smith's address: "The text is personal but objective, a blended narrative of anecdote and analysis. Smith reviews the Texas border question, the various votes and movements for recognition and annexation in Texas and the United States, his activities in France and England, and the treaties which he negotiated. He carefully treats the slavery issue and corrects the 'grave' errors in the 'incomplete and otherwise not wholly reliable history of Texas by Yoakum.'"
