First edition, first issue with misprint of "Violent Hunter" for "Violet Hunter" on page 317, line 23. Large octavo (9.25 x 6.125 inches; 234 x 155 mm.). [iv], 317, [1, colophon], [2, blank] pages. Rubbing and wear to both bindings. Bookplate and spots of soil at front pastedown of Adventures; both hinges cracked; scattered spots of foxing throughout text. Cloth of Memoirs rippled at front board; front hinge starting, rear hinge fully cracked, with backstrip partially separated from the text block; scattered foxing throughout. Very good overall. Housed together in custom slipcase and chemise.
"The initial twelve tales were collected between covers as The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, published in England and America in 1892; and eleven of the second twelve... as The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, published in 1894. If any reader be prepared to name two other books that have given more innocent but solid pleasure, let him speak now - or hold his peace!" (Haycraft, 50).
