The Beautifully Illustrated Elephant Folio Edition of The Original Works of William Hogarth by Boydell

William Hogarth. The Original Works of William Hogarth. London: John and Josiah Boydell, 1790 [circa 1802, title page reads 1790, plates watermarked 1801 and 1802]. Elephant folio. Approximately 25.75 x 19 inches. [iv] pages. Complete with 110 engravings on eighty seven sheets, including frontispiece. Bound in contemporary full diced brown calf, boards decoratively ruled in gilt, gilt board edges and turn-ins. Rebacked in the nineteenth century in brown morocco, spine elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, fourteen raised bands. Six of the plates are mounted to wove sheets, as probably issued. Binding worn, nineteenth century free endleaves creased, first few and last few leaves somewhat toned and foxed, most other plates clean. Frontispiece with neat repair along one edge of impression. Bookplate. Overall, a near fine copy, seldom found complete. From the Collection of Dr. Gerald Sugarman.
"[Hogarth] retains his unique position among English artists. It is as a pictorial chronicler of life and manners, as a satirist and humourist on canvas, that he makes his main demand upon posterity. His skill in seizing upon the ridiculous and the grotesque in life was only equalled by his power of rendering the tragic and the terrible." (DNB)
