    Description

"Probably the most important single event in Pre-Raphaelite scholarship during the last twenty years."

Twenty-five Issues from Two Bi-Annual Pre-Raphaelite Journals Bound in Twelve Matching Volumes [Together with:] Fifteen Separate Issues. Various Publishers, 1977-1998. Bound volumes include the complete six issue run of The Pre-Raphaelite Review (1977-1980), all fourteen issues of its successor The Journal of Pre-Raphaelite Studies (1980-1987), both of which were edited by Francis Golffing, Barbara Golffing, and Nathan Cervo; and all five issues of the journal re-titled The Journal of Pre-Raphaelite and Aesthetic Studies (1987-1989), edited by William E. Fredeman and Ira B. Nadel. Each volume is cloth bound with leather title/volume label on the spine. Thirteen separate issues in original printed wraps, including the first issues of The Journal of Pre-Raphaelite Studies: New Series (1992-1998), edited by Julie F. Codell, Judy Kennedy, Florence S. Boos, Susan P. Casteras, and Debra N. Mancoff. Included are two duplicate copies of the special final issue of The Journal of Pre-Raphaelite and Aesthetic Studies titled A Rossetti Cabinet, one of which is still in its shrink wrap and the other is housed in a custom made cloth clam shell box with title label on the spine. The custom box has a stain on its front cover. Occasional small corner bends and creases to pages. One hardbound volume has small spots on the lower edge of its text block, while another has a pen mark on its lower edge, not affecting text inside. Overall a fascinating collection of journals, attractively bound, and in near fine condition. From the William E. Fredeman Collection.

    More Information:

"Before Pre-Raphaelitism could emerge as an independent subject it had first to find a forum, and it is for this reason that I would choose the foundation of The Journal of Pre-Raphaelite Studies as probably the most important single event in Pre-Raphaelite scholarship during the last twenty years. In an era of academic fragmentation, when writers as major as Blake and as trivial as Don Marquis have their own newsletters, there was no organ specifically designed to promulgate and stimulate research on the Pre-Raphaelites until 1977. The Journal of Pre-Raphaelite Studies [has] done more to promote a greater awareness of the movement than any single publication, while at the same time fulfilling the mandate of the specialized journal to assist in shaping the course of research in the field." (W.E. Fredeman, 1988)
