An Attractive Copy of "The Yellow Book"
    in the Original Cloth

The Yellow Book. An Illustrated quarterly. London: Elkin Mathews and John Lane, 1894-1897. Thirteen small quarto volumes. Plates and cover designs by Aubrey Beardsley and others. Edited by Henry Harland. Original yellow cloth, each decorated lavishly in differing designs in black. Spines in black with variations. Edward Hasell's bookplates in all volumes but the last, which shows glue residue but plate is lacking. Some rubbing and light wear, rear cover of volume I shows slight water damage, a few small tears to the cloth in places. Spines slightly darkened. Altogether, a very nice set. A complete set of The Yellow Book, "a quarterly consisting of short fiction, poetry, essays, and illustrations published in England between 1894 and 1897. Its literary editor was the American expatriate novelist Henry Harland (1861-1905); Aubrey Beardsley served as art editor for the first two years and was primarily responsible for setting the exotic, sometimes bizarre tone of the publication...In form and content, The Yellow Book anticipated the Little Magazines of the first decades of the 20th century" (Benét's Reader's Encyclopedia). The first issue included Max Beerbohm's controversial essay "A Defence of Cosmetics." The literary contributors included Max Beerbohm, George Gissing, Edmund Gosse, Kenneth Grahame, Henry James, Richard Le Gallienne, Arthur Symons, H.G. Wells, and W.B. Yeats. The illustrators included Aubrey Beardsley, Max Beerbohm, R. Anning Bell, Laurence Housman, Sir Frederick Leighton, Joseph Pennell, Charles Robinson, Walter Sickert, and William Strang. From the Pre-Raphaelite Collection of William E. Fredeman.
