Stanley Kubrick [American Film Director, 1928-1999]. Typed Letter Signed. June 18th, 1964. Single page on Polaris Productions stationery, with a copy of The Stanley Kubrick Archives.

    More Information:

One quarto page (approximately 11 x 8.5 inches) on white stationery of Kubrick's production company, Polaris Productions. Two horizontal creases, some toning and rubbing to letter, inkstamp and marking to lower right corner of letter. Very good. Addressed to Mr. Thomas Turner, President of the National Space Club. Written by Kubrick during the pre-production phase of 2001: A Space Odyssey. In this letter, he mentions the 1964 science fiction film, Robinson Crusoe on Mars. In this letter, he discusses an idea he has for shooting some sequences on the moon for 2001 (he never explicitly mentions the title of the film, but it is clear what he is referring to). Kubrick also criticizes the lighting of Robinson Crusoe on Mars, but is somewhat understanding about the quality of the film's special effects ("but keep in mind they probably made this picture at a fraction of what I imagine our opus will cost.")

    [Together With:]

[Stanley Kubrick]. [Alison Castle, editor]. The Stanley Kubrick Archives. Köln, Taschen, [2005]. First edition, with CD interview of Kubrick and 70 mm. film section from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Fine.

With CD interview with Kubrick by Jeremy Bernstein, and 70 mm. film print (from Kubrick's own print) of 2001: A Space Odyssey (part of a sequence of David Bowman and Frank Poole emerging from the spinning portion of the Discovery).
