    Description

Man Ray's Important Book of Photographs

Man Ray. Photographs 1920-1934. New York: James Thrall Soby/Random House, 1934.

First edition, second issue ("Second Edition" on title page). Quarto. Approximately 12 x 9.25 inches. [120] pages with 104 full-page black and white photographic reproductions.

Publisher's printed paper wrappers, spiral-bound. Some wear to covers, a tear along front "joint" about three inches long at top, minor soiling to rear cover. Plastic spiral binder split in the middle along the back, not affecting binding integrity. Housed in cardboard clamshell case with printed paper spine label. Overall, a very good copy of this notoriously fragile item.

The publisher put the false edition statement on the title page to make it appear that the book was selling better than it was in an effort to re-invigorate poor sales.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
