Le Corbusier (Charles-Édouard Jeanneret). Corrected Typescript of the Essay, "Volonté" ("Desire"). [No place:] dated 19 November 1937. An original twelve-page typed manuscript with holograph corrections and additions by Le Corbusier (totaling roughly fifty words). 12 sheets, 8.25 x 10.5 inches (210 x 270 mm.). A few small stains or soiled spots, one horizontal fold, a couple corners with creased folds, Some edge tears or light chipping, typed to the right edge of the sheets leaving no right margin. Despite these minor flaws, still a very good Le Corbusier typescript. The essay is an impassioned polemic affirming the connection between modern architecture, urbanism, and the creative awakening of ordinary people. It was published in his 1938 volume Des Canons, des munitions? Merci! Des logis...S.V.P. Dismissing suburbanization as "a defeatist evasion," Le Corbusier hails "the housing of the New Age" (i.e., high-density concrete and steel buildings) and automobiles, and decries the failure of Parisian planners to "recognize the revolution in architecture brought about over the last hundred years." A wonderful example of Le Corbusier's high modernist philosophy and visionary polemical style.
