One of Only Fifteen Copies, Signed by Pennell

Joseph Pennell. The Adventures of an Illustrator. Boston: Little Brown. 1925.

One of only fifteen copies for presentation signed by Pennell. This designated as copy "K." Additionally inscribed by Pennell beneath the frontispiece. Quarto. xxiii, 372 pages. 220 illustrations, as well as an additional fourteen illustrations which appear only in this limited edition, including an etching signed in pencil. Laid in is an additional booklet in wrappers, "The Adventures of an Illustrator by Joseph Pennell, The Making of the Book, Together with Works in Oils, Watercolors, Etc," published by the Anderson Galleries, 1925, and signed by Elizabeth Robins Pennell on the title page.

Half calf and brown cloth covered boards. Illustrated throughout with reproductions of Pennell's work. The dust jacket has light chipping at the upper spine. In the original publisher's box, which is missing portions of the side flaps. A near fine copy.

Joseph Pennell, friend and biographer of Whistler, is perhaps best known for his depictions of the industrial world. "He has perceived the dramatic, new age aspects of oil-fields, skyscrapers, and smelters and has recorded his perceptions convincingly" (from The Dial, 1916). The Adventures of an Illustrator is a comprehensive overview of Pennell's remarkable career and broad body of work.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
