    Description

A Study of Miniatures Dedicated to the Life of Christ

Frédéric Macler, Miniatures arméniennes, Paris: Paul Geuthner, 1913. Frédéric Macler (1869-1938) was one of the best Armenian Studies scholars of his time and professor of Armenian at the Ecole des Langues Vivantes of Paris. He published many works about Armenian art. This study of miniatures dedicated to the life of Christ and ornamental paintings in manuscripts from the tenth to the seventeenth century is based on manuscripts found in Vienna, Holy Echmiadzin (now in Yerevan), Paris, and Bolonia. It contains 68 plates in black and white. [with:] Frédéric Macler, L'enluminure arménienne profane. Paris: Paul Geuthner, 1928. This study of Armenian miniatures with non-religious subjects is based on F. Macler's investigations of manuscripts from the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice, the libraries of the Mekhitarist Congregation in Venice and Vienna, and various libraries of Paris. It contains 93 plates in black and white. [and:] Album of 101 black and white architecture plates. These carefully printed plates have no identification of their own. They are actually the illustrations of the book Études sur l'art médiéval en Géorgie et en Arménie (Paris, 1929), by Lithuanian art historian Jurgis Baltrusaitis (1903-1988). The photographs of monuments from Armenia and Georgia (there are also some photographs of European monuments, for comparative purposes), which were partly taken by Baltrusaitis himself during his trip of 1927, reflect the state of the architectural monuments during the 1910s and 1920s (some of them neglected or destroyed since then, particularly those in Turkey) and constitute a piece of historical and scholarly value.
