"A didactic poem about painting, written between 1641 and 1665. Sets down theoretical principals, based on Italian precedents, which were most influential for the theory and teaching of art in France and England." - Arntzen and Rainwater.

Du Fresnoy (1611-1665) French poet and painter, "Fresnoy was a great master of the rules, history, and theory of his profession... Poetry shared with painting the time and thoughts of Du Fresnoy, who, as he penetrated into the secrets of the latter art, wrote down his observations; and having at last acquired a full knowledge of the subject, formed a design of writing a poem upon it, which he did not finish till many years afterwards, when he had consulted the best writers, and examined with the utmost care the most admired pictures in Italy...he continued to revise his poem, on which he bestowed so much attention as frequently to interrupt his professional labours...In 1694, Dryden made a prose translation of it into English, which he accompanied with his ingenious parallel between poetry and painting." -Chalmers.

"Graham was an acquaintance of Vertue, the engraver, and supplied him with some of the information worked up by Horace Walpole into his Anecdotes of Painting, notably from a manuscript notebook of paintings sold at several sales, extracted from catalogues, alphabetically digested, &c... In the preface to the translation of De Piles's Art of Painting, published in 1706, allusion is made to Graham's treatise, and it is regretted that he was unable to compile a similar account of the English school." - DNB.
