Antonio Quadri. Il Canal Grande do Venezia. Venice: S. Lazzaro, 1838. Lazzaro edition, fourth overall, appearing a decade after the first (1928), with previous editions also appearing in 1831 and 1834. Oblong folio (10.1875 x 16.25 inches; 259 x 413). [2, blank], 15, [1, blank], [96] pages; last forty-eight leaves consisting of full-page illustrations, rectos only, including a map and forty-seven numbered engravings (nineteen of the left side of the canal and twenty-eight of the right); plate indentations vary, usually approximately 5.5 x 13.75; each beautifully hand-colored; additional hand-colored illustration on the half-title page. Contemporary red quarter-morocco, spine lettered and elaborately tooled in gilt, incorporating the publisher's (?) illustrated wrappers pasted over the boards. All edges sprinkled blue. Plain gray-blue endpapers, possibly slightly later, with a recent bookseller notation on the upper corner of the rear pastedown, partially covered by the turn in of the rear board (potentially hinting at some expert sophistication), rear paste down possibly printed on the verso with the bite of type visible. Ex-library with a small circular label at the foot of the spine, call letters in pencil and a rubber stamp on the title-page. Backstrip lightly worn, particularly at the spine ends and along the joints; corners bumped and somewhat worn, exposing another layer of paper (sprinkled blue like the page edges) between the wrappers and the boards; boards lightly discolored with some minor soiling and light spotting. Page edges foxed; occasional light foxing to the margins, but the text and plates are quite clean and bright. Near fine. A stunning production. Uncommon, with the last 1838 edition appearing at auction in 1971.
