[Tsuguharu] Foujita. A Book of Cats. Being Twenty Drawings. Poems in Prose by Michael Joseph. New York: Covici Friede Publishers, 1930. First edition, limited to 500 copies, of which this is number twenty-eight, and signed by the artist. Quarto (13 x 9.875 inches; 323 x 256 mm.). [2], 84 (i.e. [46]) pages. Twenty engraved plates inserted throughout (included in pagination), each rubber-stamped "Made in France" on the bottom corner of each recto, as issued. Publisher's light red cloth, spine and front board lettered in silver. Page edges untrimmed, with a single bolt between the limitation leaf and preceding blank still unopened. Ex-library with call letters written in white ink at the base of the spine and again in pencil on the copyright page; title-page with five short vertical marks (two below the B in Book and three below the F in Foujita). Covers very lightly soiled, with a faint blemish near the bottom corner of the front board; lower portion of the boards faintly darkened; backstrip dulled just a shade. Text block with just a hint of yellowing to the page edges; endpapers very faintly discolored at the hinges, with a couple minor ripples to the rear pastedown. Very good. Lacking additional suite of twenty illustrations printed on Japanese vellum paper.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
