    [Sixteen Plates]. Daniel King. The Cathedrall and Conventuall Churches of England and Wales. London: 1656. Sixteen engravings laid on eleven sheets of paper. Trimmed around borders and laid on paper. Light edge wear and soiling. Very good collection of plates. From the Krown & Spellman Collection.

    Various sizes from between approximately 6.5 x 10 to 8 x 13 inches.                       

    Lot includes multiple views and perspective of these cathedrals and churches: Church of Ely (2). Church of Croyland (2). Westminster Abbey (2). Wells Cathedral (2). Durham Castle, Bath Abbey, Malmesbury Abbey, and Exeter. Also includes ground plans: "Ichnographia" of both Westminster and St. Paul's. Added are two extra plates, an 18th century view of Church of Ely and a 18th century portrait of William the Conqueror.

    Twelve of the plates are by Daniel King, two are unattributed, one has its name trimmed off, and one is by J. Basire.

    All plates are trimmed around borders and are laid on paper, few have small unobtrusive holograph pencil numbers on their corners, the Basire plate of the North West View of Ely Cathedral has foxing and discoloration around its margins, light smudges and occasional minor soiling; otherwise an overall very good collection of plates.

    Daniel King (1616-1661), English topographical etcher, student of Wenceslaus Hollar, all his etchings belong to the 1650's. Most of King's images for this series were later reproduced by Hollar in William Dugdale's 'Monasticon Anglicanum' (1655-1673).
