With Seven Beautiful Full-Color Lithographs by Kees Van Dongen, as Well as the Four Censured Illustrations

[Kees Van Dongen, illustrator]. Hassan Badreddine el Bassraoui. Conte des 1001 nuits. [Paris: Editions de la Sirene, 1918]. First edition, one of 200 copies printed on Vélin de Hollande van Gelder Zonen, out of a total edition of 310 (this being copy number 271). Quarto. [205], [3, blank] pages. With seven full-color lithographed illustrations. Also with index entitled, "Quatre Dessins Censurés", and four loose ribald line drawings. Profusely illustrated with full-page line drawings. All pages in loose gatherings, as issued, the whole housed in original color lithographed wrappers. All pages unopened at top. Wrappers repaired at spine on verso, some rubbing and thumbsoiling to wrappers. Still, a very good example of this strikingly beautiful book.

    More Information:

Editions de la Sirene was one of the most progressive of the post-World War I French printers, with their illustrations beautifully reproduced by photochemical engraving, and in a very modern and readable prose style. This is the first book illustrated by Van Dongen, and his work, as well as the composition of the book in general, reflect the aesthetics of the director of the press at that time, Blaise Cendrars.
