A Handsome Opera Score for Lully's Atys

[Jean-Baptiste] de Lully. Atys, Tragedie. Mise en Musique par Monsieur de Lully, Ecuyer-Conseiller-Secretaire du Roy, Maison, Couronne de France & des ses Finances, & Sur-Intendant de la Musique de Sa Majesté. Paris: J. B. Christophe Ballard, 1720.

Second edition. Folio, 14.25 x 10.5 inches. [1, printed title-page], 2, printed contents pages, 1, printed list of author's works, 5-225, [1, blank] engraved pages. First two pages of Prologue (the first two pages of the score itself) wanting. With an engraved headpiece at the beginning of each act, four of the (presumably) five present. Additionally, two leaves of the score (pages 221-224) have been replaced with manuscript pages.

Bound into twentieth-century half brown morocco over cloth boards, spine ruled and lettered in dark brown. Some rubbing to binding, some wear to score, with some repairs/restoration to some pages, a few short tears. Still, very good. Housed in morocco-tipped cloth slipcase with a folio missal page affixed to each panel.

Jean-Baptiste de Lully (1632-1687) was an Italian-born French composer and a favorite of the court of Louis XIV. He is considered the master of the French Baroque Style. Perhaps more importantly, he is considered the father of French opera, having come to the conclusion that the Italian style of opera, in vogue at the beginning of his career, was incompatible with French audiences. He composed operatic works more suited to his adopted country, including the present work, Atys, which became known as "the king's opera," because of Louis XIV's great love of it.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
