[Eric Pape]. Timothy Cole (American Wood Engraver 1852-1931). Autograph Letter Signed to Artist Eric Pape. Paris: Mar 29th /91.

    More Information:

One octavo page on one octavo leaf. Approximately 8 x 5 inches. On thin plain white paper. Toned, one horizontal crease, some edgewear. Good.

    "My dear Pape

A card from Pennell to Unwin or Macmillan would, I imagine, be better than a line from me as Pennell is very intimate with them.

Mrs. Pennell is charming and I must ask you to say a few kind words to her for me. Wishing you every possible success, I remain

    Very truly yours

    Timothy Cole

Get Bliss's addres from Pennell as I have mislaid it. P - will give you his card to him also.

    T. C."

[Together with:] Three proof etchings on tissue. All approximately 10.5 x 8 inches. Some wear. Good.

Cole was one of the finest wood engravers of the late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-centuries. The Pennell in this letter is probably Cole's friend, artist Joseph Pennell (1857-1926). It seems as if Pape had contacted Cole for an introduction to Pennell for the purpose of another introduction for Pape to the publishers mentioned in the letter.

As a matter of interest, Cole's son, portraitist Alphaeus Philemon Cole (1876-1988) died at the age of 112 years and 136 days, one of the world's oldest living men verified.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
