    Scarce Collection of Fifty
    Eighteenth-Century Engraved Views of Rome

[Domenico Montagù, and others, illustrators]. Nuova Raccolta delle più belle vedute di Roma dissegnate, e intagliate da celebri autori [New Collection of the Most Beautiful Views of Rome Designed, and Engraved by Celebrated Artists]. Rome: 1761. Small oblong folio (8.3125 x 12.75 inches; 211 x 325 mm.). Letterpress title-page printed in red and black with wood-engraved vignette and fifty engraved plates by Domenico Montagù, and others. Of the fifty plates, thirty-seven are signed "Montagù Sculp." (or some variation thereof); the remainder are unsigned, except for one (Plate 32) which is signed "M. Pulini d. & Scul." Only one other plate gives the name of an artist, Plate 37 which is signed "Montagu del. et Sculp." It is possible that Montagù was the artist for all of the other plates, although it is possible some of the original drawings were made by Jean Barbault (see Millard, Italian, 13).
Contemporary vellum over pasteboard. Smooth spine divided into compartments by decorative gilt bands, lettered in gilt in one compartment over tan stain, the remaining compartments with a gilt floral center tool. Binding rubbed at corners and board edges; rear joint cracked at title compartment. Some foxing and browning, heavy in places. Unfortunately this wonderful collection of views is heavily wormed. The worming is mostly marginal, but only a few images have remained unaffected. Early ink inscription on front free endpaper: "Piédrola Narvaez, y Verdugo." Printed book label on verso of title: "Utitur / Fr. Franciscus Friego / S. Th. Lector, / Provinciae S. Petri / de Alcantara / de Granada / Filius."

    More Information:

Domenico Montagù was an "obscure" (Millard, Italian) Italian artist who collaborated with French artist Jean Barbault (1718-1762), who had arrived in Rome in 1747, and had quickly became involved with the circle of Piranesi, with whom he worked on the Varie Vedute di Roma Antica e Moderna and for whose Antichità Romane (1756) he contributed figures for fourteen plates, thus becoming one of the few official collaborators of Piranesi. Montagù engraved many of the plates in Barbault's 1761 Recueïl des plus beaux morceaux de l'antiquité romaine qui existe encore.

A French edition of Montagù's Nuova Raccolta was published in 1770 with title: Nouveau recueil de vues des plus beaux restes de Rome Ancienne et des plus belles eglises, places, palais et fontaines de Rome Moderne, dessine´es, et grave´s par d'habiles maitres en 50 feuilles.

The views, which are numbered in early ink in the upper right corner of each plate, include many of the famous sights of modern Rome, mostly organized by building type: basilicas, churches, plazas, columns, fountains, palaces, arches, bridges, and tombs.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
