    Description

[Art and Design]. [Gustav Klimt, Johanna Hollmann, Minka, Podhajska, et al., contributors]. Die Fläche. Vienna: Anton Schroll, [ca. 1903-1910]. First edition of the full run of Die Fläche ("The Surface"), an art periodical produced by the Wiener Werkstätte to promote work done by the workshop members. Two volumes, originally housed in three slipcases. Quarto (12.25 x 8 inches; 310 x 203 mm.). [iv], 192; 1-12 [sic]; 13-32 [sic] pages. Twelve fascicles of volume I, and two issues of four fascicles each of volume II, as issued. Complete with all artwork and text. Original wrappers, housed in carboard slipcases with printed paper labels. The two cloth spines intended to attach the cardboard covers of the slipcases are missing, as is the rear board of the second slipcase. Slipcase pieces are toned and worn, some of the fascicle leaves are somewhat thumbsoiled, with some occasional chips, creases or edgewear. Very good.

This item is a "Musterbuch," or a pattern book, entirely composed of reproductions of artwork intended for application on all "surfaces," including posters, books, wallpaper, textiles, stained glass, embroidery, etc. The designs are printed in full color via algraphy (aluminum plate lithography). The Wiener Werkstätte was begun in 1903 by Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser as a reaction against the more conservative Association of Austrian Artists at the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Inspired by contemporary European design as well as the arts as applied by William Morris, Hoffmann and Moser established the Wiener Werkstätte as a furthering of the Morris aesthetic, and Die Fläche was the result of their ambitions. Complete sets are very difficult to find.
