    First Edition of Montanus' Important Work on the Americas

    Arnoldus Montanus. De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld of Beschryving Van America en 't Zuid-Land... Amsterdam: Jacob Meurs, 1671. Very good. Some browning and foxing to a few leaves and plates but most in very clean condition; several folding illustrations repaired at fold, 12 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches. Full vellum with elaborate blind stamped decoration on front and back cover. Rebound with modern vellum spine, two holes in front and back cover but lacking original ties, raised bands with six compartments, [12] (engraved half-title, blank, leaf inserted later with small engraved portrait of Montanus facing title page, title page in red and black ink, blank, engraved portrait of Ioan Maurits, blank, four page introduction and dedication, 585, [27] (index, list of writers and list of plates) pages plus six full page engraved illustrations, one large folding map of North and South America, fifteen engraved folding maps and thirty-two engraved folding illustrations plus numerous engraved illustrations in text. The true first of Montanus' important work on the Americas as noted by the portrait of Maurits, Prince of Nassau. The work provides early and detailed description of Brazil, Chili, Peru and Mexico as well as California and the East Coast of the United States. This book is also known for one of the earliest views of New York, depicted in one of the text illustrations.
