Description

Aristide Maillol. One Autograph Letter Signed. "Maillol." Two pages in French, 10.5" x 2.5", Marly le roi ; April 28, 1937. This letter is addressed to Félix Fénéon (1861-1944), the French art critic and writer, and reads [English translation], "I was very happy to see your name on an envelope in my mailbox. I also bless that Sophie that she gave me a chance to have some news of you. I often asked around about you but no one knew what you had become. What a shame that you hide even from those who love you. Do not forget that if you ever come around Marly, there is a place set for you at my table. We would love to have you. I will answer Sophie Woff [or Wolff--unidentified] now, although I would have waited longer since I have such an enormous amount of work and do not have energy for writing letters."

[Along with] Aristide Maillol. Copy of Letter. Four pages in French, 8.75" x 5.5", n.p. ; April 30, 1937. This letter is written by Sophie Woff [or Wolff], and starts the letter by telling her recipient, Felix Fénéon, that she received a letter from Maillol on April 28, written from Marly le Roi, and has copied it for him. In his letter to her, Maillol writes about the "Generali tendency of Germans to a certain violence in expression". He writes that the French "look for harmony". Sophie then resumes writing to Fénéon and tells him that she chose Maillol as her master because he is the closest living artist who "best approaches" the most pure and highest arts, being Egyptian, Assyrian, and Indian art. Later she acknowledges that Fénéon sent Paul Signac's partner, Jeanne Selmersheim-Desgrange some photos made by Sophie and that she received a very nice letter from Jeanne about this. She thanks him for his kindness regarding her photographic endeavors. Sends her best to him and Fanny (his wife).

Aristide Joseph Bonaventure Maillol (1861-1944) was a French sculptor, painter, and printmaker.

Condition : Letter has horizontal and vertical folds, slight toning around the edges, else very good.
