Antonio De Castillo. El devoto peregrino, viage de Tierra Santa. Madrid: Imprenta real, 1656. Early edition, appearing two years after the first; popular on publication, as it provided Spanish faithful with several views of the Holy Land. Octavo (9.3125 x 6.6875 inches; 236 x 166 mm.). [24], 511, [1, blank], [17, index], [1]; engraved title-page by Pedro de Villafranca, with folding map of Jerusalem and three additional plans or maps inserted and numerous intertextual illustrations throughout. Near-contemporary vellum, spine lettered in manuscript; nineteenth-century manuscript notation to front cover, leather ties; page edges sprinkled light green. Binding with some trace wear and some minor soiling. Upper margin, and to a lesser extent along center-fold, of folding map worn and soiled with some minor paper loss; fore-edge margins of some early leaves of text soiled and with narrow dampstain; three terminal leaves with clean closed tear to bottom margin, about one-inch long; holographic notations to front endpaper and final page; light foxing throughout. Very good.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
