Anthony Trollope. The Vicar of Bullhampton. London: 1869-1870. First edition, in the original monthly parts.

    More Information:

Anthony Trollope. The Vicar of Bullhampton. With thirty illustrations by H. Woods. London: Bradbury, Evans, and Co., 1869-1870.

First edition. In the original eleven monthly parts (July 1869-May 1870). Octavo. xvi, 481, [1, blank] pages. Thirty-five wood-engraved illustrations (including twenty-three inserted plates and twelve vignettes) after H. Woods.

Original blue-gray pictorial wrappers printed in red and black. Chipping, soiling and wear to wrappers, with spines chipped or splitting, some perrished. Three parts (1, 4, 8) lacking the rear wrapper, now crudely replaced with brown paper. Part 3 with a large tear and chips to the rear wrapper. Sheets are generally clean with light soiling or foxing in places. Creased corners in part 8. Contemporary ink signature on front wrapper of part one, in pencil on some others. Altogether, a fair to good copy of the scarcest Trollope in parts. Sadleir, Trollope, 33.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
