    Description

Anonymous. The Experiences of a Lady Detective. London: Charles Henry Clarke, [1884]. Reissue of first edition. Octavo. [4], 308 pages. Publisher's pictorial paper-covered boards; all text block edges trimmed; advertisement endpapers. Boards heavily rubbed and a bit soiled with loss to spine ends and paper chipped over board edges; boards beginning to split away at joint ends and, though a bit loose, are still sound. Some soiling, including what appears to be traces of adhesive residue, at endpapers. Gatherings uneven and starting to pull away from sewing; a few becoming loose and fragile; text block edges dulled; occasional speck of foxing or evidence of dog-earing scattered throughout interior. Good. Though originally believed to have first been published in 1861, experts in the genre have determined this to be a ghost issue, with the first edition actually appearing in 1864 under the title The Revelations of a Lady Detective. After this came a "reissue with the title The Experiences, which [the British Museum] dated as of 1884" (Ellery Queen, In the Queens' Parlor, p. 43). Sometimes attributed to William Stephens Hayward. Features Mrs. Paschal, one of the very first female detectives. Queen's Quorum 5.
