A Handsome 1794 Second Edition of Ann Racliffe's Masterpiece

Ann Radcliffe. Mysteries of Udolpho, a Romance; Interspersed with Some Pieces of Poetry. London: Printed for G. G. and J. Robinson, 1794. Second edition. Four twelvemo volumes. Half-titles present in all four volumes. Near-contemporary vellum over green marbled paper boards with spine title labels. Moderate wear and staining to the bindings. Minor abrading to the board edges. Bookplate of Sinckler Porter to front pastedowns. Small circular ownership stamp to the half-title and title page in each volume. Small area at the top of each half-title cut away, likely removed signatures. Occasional, mostly minor foxing. Some creased corners. Volume one with minor marginal tears and tape repairs to K6 and K7. Closed tear to the bottom of K3, small gouge at the top edge of Q5 and Q6 in volume three. Wrinkling to C1 in volume four. Reinforced hinges. Overall, a very good copy. Rothschild 1701.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
