First Edition of Andrew Lang's The Library,
    Extra-Illustrated with Eighty-Nine Additional
Plates and an Autograph Note Signed by Lang

Andrew Lang. The Library. With a Chapter on Modern English Illustrated Books by Austin Dobson. London: Macmillan & Co., 1881. First edition. Small octavo (7 x 4.6875 inches; 183 x 119 mm.). [iii]- xv, [1], 184 pages plus [8] pages advertisements. Lacking half-title. Three plates (two chromolithographs of bindings and a reproduction of a title-page); wood-engraved frontispiece (bound before dedication leaf), sixteen wood-engraved text illustrations, and wood-engraved head- and tail-piece and initials by Swain, O. Lacour, John Jackson, W. J. Linton, the Dalziel Brothers, T. Quartley, J. D. Cooper, and others, after drawings by Walter Crane, Kate Greenaway, T. Bewick, D. G. Rossetti, John Tenniel, "E. V. B." (Mrs. Boyle), Randolph Caldecott, George du Maurier, Linley Sambourne, T. Stothard, Richard Doyle, and others. Extra-illustrated with eighty-nine additional plates and an Autograph Note Signed by Andrew Lang.
Early twentieth-century brown crushed levant morocco. Covers with gilt double fillet border; spine panelled and lettered in gilt in compartments, with five gilt-dotted raised bands; board edges ruled in gilt; gilt inner dentelles; top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Spine and upper portion of rear cover slightly faded; joints rubbed, and starting to crack; tiny sliver missing at top of spine; lower corners very slightly bumped, other corners lightly rubbed; a few additional lightly rubbed areas; tiny nick to front cover at fore-edge. Paper slightly browned at the edges, with occasional thumbsoiling; diagonal crease across upper corner of a few leaves (now pressed); two small ink stains in outer margin of page 21; small adhesion to lower margin of page 145. Faint offsetting from some of the plates; several chromolithographed plates with slight vertical crease, most visible on the verso. An excellent example of early twentieth-century extra-illustration, in near fine condition.
"There are, in every period of taste, books which, apart from their literary value, all collectors admit to possess, if not for themselves, then for others of the brotherhood, a peculiar preciousness. These books are esteemed for curiosity, for beauty of type, paper, binding, and illustrations, for some connection they may have with famous people of the past, or for their rarity. It is about these books, the method of preserving them, their enemies, the places in which to hunt for them, that the following pages are to treat" (pages 3-4).
The Autograph Note Signed from Andrew Lang to [Scottish novelist William?] Black, dated "Dec. 8. / 8 Gibson Place," is written in black ink on one of four pages of a folded leaf, and presumably refers to Robert Louis Stevenson's depiction of Allan Breck Stewart in his novel Kidnapped (1886), and its sequel, Catriona (1893): "Dear Black, / In re Allan Breck [Steward] / his lingo. The Highlanders / reported verbatim in / Bishop Forbes's Lyon in / Mourning (Jacobite / Memoirs) speak ordinary / broad Scots, with a few odd idioms. I suppose / Stevenson went on / that evidence. / Yours very truly A Lang."
The extra-illustrations include: photogravure plates, including "The Friendship of Books" after a painting by L. Minnigerode; a frontispiece portrait of the author, and portraits of Torquato Tasso, Confucius, Dante Alighieri, Sophia Western, and Charles Kingsley, most with descriptive tissue guards printed in red; chromolithographed plates from the series "Choice Examples of Book Illumination. Fac-similes from Illuminated Manuscripts and Illustrated Books of Early Date," and "Choice Examples of Paleography. Fac-similes from Rare and Curious Manuscripts of Oriental Countries," some with the descriptive tissue guards printed in red; numerous etched and engraved plates, many expertly inlaid to size or on India paper mounted, some with tissue guards, including portraits of Hans Sloane, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Samuel Johnson, Joseph Priestley, John Gower, Edgar Alan Poe, Edmund Spenser, Thomas Gray, William Black, and others; a folding engraved plate, mounted on card stock, of "The New Building at Cambridge in Perspective" by J. Clark, from Britannia Illustrata, or Views of All the Palaces...(London: 1724); a double-page hand-colored plate captioned "The Philistines be upon thee, Samson;" and an etched plate by George Cruikshank, on India paper mounted, captioned: "What it must come to, at last, if the Ladies go on blowing themselves out as they do!"

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
