André Lhote. Eight Autograph Letters Signed and One Typed Letter Signed. Various sizes, places, and dates. One letter is illustrated with a woodcut engraving, signed by Lhote. He writes at length about his pecuniary troubles and inability to sell paintings, his conflicted relationship with being labeled a Cubist and with labels in general, and his opinions and insights into developments in the world of art. The letters also reveal the tumultuous relationship Lhote had with the Mexican painter Diego Rivera (1886-1957), which veered from friendship to hatred (at least on Lhote's part) and he goes into detail about his dislike of Rivera and the reasons for it in multiple letters (none addressed to Diego Rivera himself).
André Lhote (1885-1962) was a French Cubist painter of figure subjects, portraits, landscapes and still life. He also taught at various art schools in France, and his students included the American painter, illustrator, and editor, Margaret Lefranc (1907-1998); the British war artist and society portrait painter, Simon Elwes (1902-1975); and the noted French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004).
Condition: The letters have usual folds, are toned, with some wear, tears, and thumb soiling; overall good or better.
